If your Edwardian home has a wide bay, decorative upper lights or generous timber trim, decide what should remain visible. A shutter layout can provide privacy across the main glass while respecting those details. The right arrangement depends on the actual window.
Keep upper glazing in the plan
Stained glass and patterned fanlights can be a focal point. Discuss whether shutters should finish below them, cover the full opening or use a separately considered upper section. Leaving upper glass exposed preserves the detail but leaves that part uncovered for privacy, light control and insulation.

Wide bays: fewer panels are not always better
Large panels can look simple when closed, but their opening space, weight and manufacturer limits need checking. More panels add vertical lines yet may make folding them back more practical. Ask to see the divisions and opening sequence before choosing by appearance alone.
Check rails against window mullions and the sill. Allow for handles, vents, radiators and the furniture you use every day.
Full-height or tier-on-tier?
Full-height shutters give a continuous outline and can offer separate upper and lower louvre control with the appropriate specification. Tier-on-tier shutters have independently opening upper and lower panels. The difference matters if you want to open the top completely rather than just tilt its slats.

View colours in the room
A warm finish looks different beside cream trim than a bright white sample. Compare samples against the window, walls and coloured glass at different times of day. Discuss the material’s care requirements, especially where condensation or splashes are a concern.
Retain access and historic details
Original joinery and shutter boxes should be assessed before fixings are proposed. Make sure you can still reach and open the window. For a listed building or work affecting historic features, speak to the local conservation officer before alterations.

Comfort beside a larger glazed area
